Flexible Control of Distribution Systems

A team of 5 professors: Scott Sudhoff and Mariesa Crow from University of Missouri - Rolla, Kraig Olejniczak of University of Arkansas , and Anil Pahwa and Shelli Starrett of Kansas State University have received a grant from the National Science Foundation to develop 2 new courses in the power systems area. These courses will concentrate on application of advanced computer, communications, and electronics technology for improvement of efficiency, and reliability of power systems. The first course dealing with distribution systems was taught by Anil Pahwa and Kraig Olejniczak in Fall 96. It will be taught again in Fall 97. The topics that will be covered include,

  1. Distribution Automation (DA)
  2. Cost/Benefit of DA
  3. Outage Management
  4. Loss Management
  5. Voltage and Var Management
  6. Power Quality Enhancement

The students can enroll in this course at respective campuses under following numbers if they meet the prerequisite requirements:

  • Kansas State University -- EECE 690C or EECE 890B (Prerequisites: EECE 511 Circuit Theory II and EECE 525 Electronics I)
  • University of Missouri - Rolla -- EE 301 (Prerequisites: EE 205 Electric Machines or EE 207 Power Systems
  • University of Arkansas --
